Later that year he began to complain of migraines and, after entering French Hospital in November, was diagnosed with a malignant tumor. He was admitted to the hospital and lost 80 pounds. By the following June, his pain was so bad that doctors altered Ruths medication (with moderate success under the guise of remission). Thus, it is unlikely Ruth would have attended the 1947 event. Ruth did attend a Yankee Stadium event in his honor on June 13, 1948. It was there that former teammates Dugan and Pipp (who are both on this ball) posed with Ruth, both putting their hands on the ailing legends shoulder. Ruth retreated to the clubhouse, where Dugan later appeared to hear Ruth say: Joe, Im gone. Im gone, Joe and both immediately began to cry.
